Standard I cases: plagiarism, third-party material and online content

Use other people's work freely but name it: credit belongs to whoever produced the idea, the model or the data, and whatever you pass on becomes your responsibility.

In short

  • Plagiarism is using others' material in substantially the same form without naming the source. It covers ideas and models, not just words, and oral and video material as well as reports.
  • Typical forms: a report with the names changed, lightly reworded excerpts, quotations from unnamed 'leading analysts', another's forecast stripped of its caveats, charts without sources, copied proprietary spreadsheets.
  • Testing someone's model earns credit for your results, not for the concept. Cite the originator.
  • Repackaged research is fine if you do not imply authorship and you say whether it came from inside or outside your firm.
  • Cite the real source: a newspaper that merely relays a study need not be cited if you obtained and reviewed the study itself, which is the best practice.
  • Firm-owned work may be reused without crediting a departed analyst, but you may not reissue an old report solely under your own name.
