Data science: processing and visualisation
Data scientists turn raw Big Data into usable information through five processing steps (capture, curation, storage, search and transfer) and then display it with visual tools that fit the data's structure.
In short
- Data science: an interdisciplinary field combining computer science (including ML), statistics and other disciplines to extract information from Big Data.
- Capture: collecting data and converting them into a usable format; low-latency systems are essential for automated trading on real-time prices.
- Curation: cleaning, meaning finding bad or inaccurate data and adjusting for missing data.
- Storage (recording, archiving, access, database design), search (querying) and transfer (moving data to the analytical tool, such as an exchange price feed).
- Visualisation: tables and charts for structured data; interactive 3D graphics, heat maps, tree diagrams and network graphs for complex data.
- For text: a tag cloud sizes words by frequency; a mind map shows how concepts relate.
