Integrated case: reading a marketplace from GMV, take rate and mix
A marketplace has to be measured on the right base: share and drivers on GMV, pricing power on the take rate, and margins and inventory days on the part of the business that actually holds goods.
In short
- Start by splitting the panel into own retail sales (principal, gross) and third-party GMV (agent, only the fee is revenue).
- Take rate = third-party fees ÷ third-party GMV; its level and stability are the pricing-power gauge, not GMV growth.
- Market share for a platform uses total GMV over a market figure for the same period (monthly data × 12), never net revenue.
- The bottom-up driver is GMV per average active account; GMV growth = account growth × per-account growth.
- A rising agent share lifts gross margin and lowers inventory days, because fees carry no cost of goods and merchants' stock is not the platform's.
